MDRD GFR (4-variable equation)
Legacy teaching equation; many labs now report CKD-EPI—compare with your local reporting standard.

How it works
The simplified 4-variable MDRD equation estimates glomerular filtration rate from serum creatinine, age, sex, and an optional race multiplier in older reporting schemes.
eGFR = 175 × Scr^−1.154 × Age^−0.203 × 0.742 if female × 1.212 if African American (classic teaching factor)
Levey AS, et al. A more accurate method to estimate glomerular filtration rate from serum creatinine: a new prediction equation. Ann Intern Med. 1999;130(6):461-470.
Limitations
Creatinine-based eGFR is unreliable at extremes of muscle mass, pregnancy, and acute kidney injury. Many institutions have removed race coefficients from reporting—follow local laboratory interpretation.
